Triumph T120R/V Bonneville 1963-74, 649cc, ohv twin, 410lb, 50mpg, 115mph The unit-construction Bonneville has better handling than the earlier models and especially after 1971 with the oil-bearing frame, better forks and conical hub brakes. Good ones are relatively smooth, oil tight and quiet. 1966-70 bikes fetch the best prices. 1972 saw the 5 speed gearbox and 1973 front disc brakes.

the t120 bonneville is for many triumph enthusiasts the ultimate - having accepted this fact we must proceed to selecting the ultimate year of manufacture, which is of course down to the individual, and judgement may finally made with a number of criteria in mind.

arguably one of the prettiest variants of the bonneville model, the 1969 season machines were marked by only detail changes. new tank badges, rear shock absorbers with exposed springs and a revised exhaust system featuring a balance pipe adjacent to the cylinder were the most obvious changes. however, perhaps the most significant, at least in terms of engine life were the replacement of the oil pressure indictor button with a warning light that also served as an ignition light and the introduction of air filters, a first for the model. image provided by www.classic-auctions.com.

triumph were the dominant manufacturer in production racing throughout the sixties utilising tuned versions of their already potent bonneville model to good affect. a thruxton bonneville had been marketed between 1964 and 1965 incorporating a large number of the optional performance parts as standard. in theory these parts were available to anyone wishing to uprate their machine to thruxton specification, however, the availability was often disputed. original thruxton bonneville's are now highly prized collectors items but the components required to convert a standard bonnie to thruxton specification are arguably more easily acquired today than they were in the sixties. image provided by www.classic-auctions.com.

the 1970 season machines marked the end of an era for triumph, being the final year's production before the introduction of the umberslade hall designed oil in frame across both the bsa and triumph 650cc ranges. consequently changes to the specification were very limited with the adoption of the us style grab rail being the most obvious, and no doubt, welcomed amendment, at least by pillion passengers. the bonnie adopted an astral red with silver tank panels for the season, the panels being more pronounced than previously seen. image provided by www.classic-auctions.com.

The only 1970 Bonneville 750 all original Triumph still in Existence. Rare bike - only 204 of these bikes were made and approved for AMA competition in 1970. This is the only one that did not go into competition. The other 203 were stripped down and put into racing. American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation researched this motorcycle & provided letter of authentication by Mark Mederski Executive Director of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

For many enthusiasts the 1969/70 season T120 Bonneville's represent the model at its zenith. Ten years of continuous development had seen the early examples questionable handling tamed and then refined to the point that it had become a benchmark by which other machines were judged. Unit construction had been adopted for the 1963 season, resulting in simplified servicing and cleaner lines and the twin leading shoe front brake adopted from the 1968 season ensured that the machines now stopped as well as they went. For the 1969 season revisions to the flywheels which became heavier and refinements regarding the carburation laid to rest the last areas that could be criticised, namely the slightly peaky, on/off power delivery and its attendant vibration and the erratic idle and "flat spot" that had characterised earlier "concentric" equipped versions. The majority of the fixings now utilised UNF threads and the gearbox adopted wider ratios. Cosmetically the model continued in the classic Triumph mode although the tank badge changed to a slightly less fussy design. For 1970 little changed other than the cosmetics to the UK machines with a large central silver panel replacing the scallops on the fuel tank. Ironically, given the hiatus that was about to be created with the introduction of the Umberslade Hall designed 1971 season models and the consequent collapse in sales that season, 1970 was the best year in terms of sales for the "Bonnie" in the States and marks the end of an era.

Only 204 of these machines were produced and were homolgamated in the US for racing in the AMA production series events. A Rourtt barrel and pistons were substituted for the original 650cc items and a ‘T’ was added to the engine number. Very fakeable, this machine has been authenticated by the AMA museum who hold the serial numbers for the 204 bikes and it still bares the original owner/service detail label under the seat.

this original example of the t120r is finished in tiger gold and white, a colour scheme that had been adopted by the bonneville in 1972 and is described as being in working order. it is equipped with a boyer electronic ignition system and morgo oil pump and has benefited from the carburettors being overhauled and the cylinder heads reconditioned and gas flowed. image provided by www.classic-auctions.com.
