In performance terms, the arrow gained over its better dressed stablemate by having a better power-to-weight ratio and could constantly accelerate and cruise at a slightly better rate. the handling also improved with the weight reduction, although things were a little 'bouncy' at higher speeds (circa 65mph). |

Design changes to both the arrow and leader were of the detail, rather that the fundamental. arrow was joined by two slightly developed versions before it was discontinued. the two variants were the super sports model, commonly known as the golden arrow - because it was an arrow and painted gold - and the arrow 200. |

1964 ariel 250 supersport golden arrow. top of ariel's two-stroke range, the arrow super sports was given a glamour finish of glided upper works and whitewall tyres, for which reason it was often called the golden arrow. |

Originality in naming models was clearly not ariel's strongpoint, as the arrow 200 was an arrow with 200cc engine, aimed at filling a gap in the insurance classes. |
