1977 1977 ducati 900 super sport ducati 900 super sport 1977 Ducati's original 900 super sport was one of the most single-minded sporting superbikes that ever devoured an innocent public road. it was essentially a street-legal production racer: fast, raw and uncompromising. it handled and slopped brilliantly, looked and sounded gorgeous and was a match for anything on road or track. the 900ss owed its existence to ducati's victory in the imola 200 race in 1972. when factory pilots paul smart and bruno spaggiari had finished first and second ahead of numerous factory opponents. the factory celebrated by producing a small batch of road-legal replicas of the racebike. these were popular, so more were built, this time called the 750 super sport instead of imola replica as the model had initially been known.

1979 Ducati 900 SS 1979 Ducati 900 SS Following Paul Smart\'s success at the 1972 Imola 200 Formula 750 race aboard one of a brace of specially prepared desmodromic vee twins demands for replica from the public and promises of one being forthcoming from Ducati were eventually fulfilled in 1974 when a single batch of round case 750cc Super Sports were built as homologation specials. The new machines, running on 40 mm Dell\'Ortos and equipped with Conti silencers (!) exuded an air of purpose. Barley legal for the road they remain the most sought after of all the exotic racing derived Ducati machines, fortunately for enthusiasts everywhere, in 1975 Ducati introduced the 900Ss, a machine that shared the same dna as its predecessor whilst being built in greater numbers. The new model adopted the square case 860cc engine was retaining the cycle parts of the 750SS. Thus in its initial form the new model ran on wire spoked wheels, and was fitted with the half fairing and single seat together with the fibreglass fuel tank first seen on the 750SS. The following year the model, now in regular production, adopted a steel fuel tank and Lanfranconi silencers together with indicators, Veglia instruments, 32mm carburettors and an air cleaner. The new silencer and smaller carburettors robbed the model of some of its performance but the presence of a pair of the larger carburettors and a set of Conti\'s (often supplied with the machine) soon restored the performance.
