1978 1978 honda gl 1000 gold wing honda gl 1000 gold wing 1978 In 1978 the k2 got snazzier cosmetics and taper roller bearings in the steering head, but the engine was not to change the whole time it stayed at one-litre capacity until the kz of '79 to '80. this got the black paint and gold pinstripe treatment plus the new comstars in place of the spokes. the exhaust turned to chrome and the dummy tank changed configuration, with gauges set in a console at the front the engine changed at last, becoming 2bhp less powerful, at 78bhp, thanks to smaller carbs and softer valve timing. torque moved down the range and suddenly the bike was a better, easier to use tourer.

1986 1986 honda gl 1200 gold wing aspencade honda gl 1200 gold wing aspencade 1986 The aspencade retains a healthy acceleration from low to high speeds, as well as an ability to cruise relatively economically in a tall top gear. with shaft drive and that big, lazy engine, maintenance is an infrequent chore. the aspencade was developed with long distances as well as high speeds in mind. it will keep on running as long as its pampered and cossetted rider wants it to. it was designed for the us roads and is as american as a japanese bike can be. honda get round proposed or actual import restrictions by assembling the aspencade in their us factory. honda's new machine has spawned imitators from the japanese rivals. but honda did it first, and the bike is still the definitive heavyweight luxury tourer.

1991 1991 honda glx 1500 gold wing se honda glx 1500 gold wing se 1991 The honda gl1500 gold wing was the first gold wing with a liquid-cooled flat-six engine with a displacement of 1520 cc. this type was available from 1988 until and including 2000. during this period the model remained nearly unchanged. in the year 1990 a special edition, the gl1500 se, was introduced at the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the honda gold wing. this type remained available in the years thereafter. since 1991 three different variants were available : the interstate, the aspencade and the se.

1993 1993 honda glx 1500 gold wing sport honda glx 1500 gold wing sport 1993 Until 1997 the three different models (interstate, aspencade and se) remained available. in 1993 the electronic cruise control of the gl1500 aspencade and the gl1500 se was improved. by measuring the speed of the crankshaft a better accuracy was obtained which allowed an adjustment of the cruising speed in steps of 1 mph. in the anniversary year 1995 (20 years honda gold wing) the three models were provided with a special anniversary badge. furthermore some minor improvements were carried through. from 1997 on the less popular interstate model was no longer available.

2001 2001 honda glx 1800 gold wing honda glx 1800 gold wing 2001 The gold wing is one of the longest-running models still on the market: the original model was the gl1000, launched in 1975. the engine has since increased in size to this 1800cc model of 2001. the engine layout has also changed, from the original flat-four to a flat-six, and features honda's pgm-fi fuel-injection system. the gl1800 is perhaps the ultimate touring machine, with an equipment list more like a luxury car. from the cd sound system, 147-litre (32 gal) luggage space and reverse gear to cruise control, heated grips and trip computer, the gold wing is simply the best-equipped bike available. its chassis is based on a twin-spar aluminium frame, with 45mm (1.8in) front forks and cbs linked brakes.
