With a strong background in buying and selling all manner of vintage vehicles, 29-year-old Angus McCurrach and 34 year old Larry Smith joined forces just over a year ago to form Iconic motorcycles. Based just outside the idyllic Cotswolds town or Bourton on the Water, the collection boasts an impressive array of 70s and 80s machinery with the odd smattering of older iron too. Larry has been working alongside many of the top auction houses for some time and has built up a good list of contacts over the years, as well as a in depth knowledge of the scene and its workings. “I also know that not being scared to ask is a great attribute” Larry added “There is no way we can know everything in fact we are well aware we know little in the grand scheme of things and its crucial to bring in a particular special as and when needed.”
Iconic do not just specialise in buying and selling classic and interesting machinery, they have extensive workshop facilities and to date they have built a handful of specials to order, and have half a dozen more awaiting assembly in the new year. “I just love the BMW Rennsport style” Larry commented “. We take an already great bike and turn it into a real looker, nothing radical but tasteful and subtle changes to styling and performance. They look good and go well too, offering the sound and feel of a classic machine with all of the reliability and usability of a more modern one. At the end of the day Iconic motorcycles is all about making, buying and selling classic machines, we also offer a finders service as we have a vast list of contacts.”
When it comes to sales the pair have a relaxed approach realising that the classic world isn’t the fast moving one of traditional retail “Its all about trust” Angus added “We believe in building a great relationship with our customers, only last week we sold the Dunstall Suzuki to a dedicated Brit bike fan who fancied a Jap classic, and after a few days he realised it simply wasn’t for him, so we took it back off him making sure he didn’t lose out financially and hopefully he will become a loyal client. We have attended several of the main classic shows this year and what we are trying to do has been well received. ”
“The face of biking has changed almost immeasurably in recent times becoming much more popular and process rising nicely, it is still a real devotee hobby though and biking people are so very much different to those into cars. We realise its important to help out even if there isn’t always a profit in every transaction, to that end we are more than happy to help broker a deal.”
The pair plan to display their wares on the track too, with an outing on their 1974 Geminiani Kawasaki planned for the 2011 classic Bol d’Or. The ex Italian Kawasaki factory Z900 engine sitting in an early hand built example of a monoshock chassis and looking every bit the tool for the job. Larry “I just love the continental approach to endurance racing, they really did take this sport seriously and the privateer stood every chance of success even against the best funded factory effort, the thinking and ingenuity of the specials is beyond belief and this shows in a large percentage of the bikes we currently have on sale.”
Another stunning machine currently for sale is a real rarity, a 1977 R100 RS HPN BMW valued around £75K. Initially based on a R100 RS this bike was converted at the HPN factory in 1981 to compete in the Dakar. It has many modifications to both the engine and the frame including a 1053cc big bore kit giving over 80 BHP at the rear wheel. It is an awesome machine with a wonderful and well-documented history making this a very rare opportunity to purchase a piece of BMW history.
The collection at present sits in a large workshop alongside a row of classic cars but that is set to change “We are currently building an all new showroom for the bikes to sit in” Angus said “This is nearing completion and will be fully operational for the new year and will make us much more accessible than we are at the moment. Of course a selection of machinery on sale is always visible on the website and we do strive to keep this as up to date as possible.”
It may be early days for the team at Iconic but they are mad keen and for that alone, deserve to do well.
