BSA B22 Empire Star
249cc. During the 1930s BSA concentrated on producing a range of dependable, well-made, competitively priced motorcycles. The firm's single-cylinder range was redesigned by Val Page for 1937, the engines taking on many of the characteristics they would retain in the post-war era, most notably dry-sump lubrication, rear-mounted magneto and that distinctively shaped timing cover. There were three new offerings in the 250 class: the sidevalve B20 and a pair of overhead-valve models – B20 and B22 - the latter designation being adopted for the top-of-the-range Empire Star. The new engines were housed in conventional cycle parts and drove via four-speed gearboxes, the Empire Star's benefiting from the convenience of foot change.

one of only three remaining from an original contract of 50 machines supplied to the British Army in 1941 and the only one remaining with all the cycle parts unique to this machine. Further contracts were abandoned in favour of the M20 sidevalve probably due to tooling issues. Originally it would have had direct lighting from an alternator but this was probably removed in order to fit the pannier equipment. This model became the prototype for the later B31.

The A10 is growing in popularity as a creditable, useable powerful classic which is easy and cheap to run and maintain, as things become more popular they inevitably become more expensive, this is a bike that can only increase in value.

75cc 4-stroke. Though influenced by Edward Turner (famous for the Ariel Square Four and Triumph Speed Twin), it had been rushed out by BSA to try and compete in a market they were losing to imports. Italian lightweight motorcycles had excellent reputations and the revolutionary Honda 4 stroke mopeds had just started to arrive. But, with inherent engine problems, most Beagles soon ended up back in the shops that had sold them. Image provided by www.BuyVintage.co.uk.
