Flogged it Friday! Yamaha R1 5JJ CDI.
“Do CDI units ever go wrong?”
Yes, pretty often too judging by the number of units I sell over the months. If you’ve lost your spark there can be all manner of reasons why that is, chances are the CDI might have eaten itself, so it is a reasonable starting point in fault finding.
“Bet they aren’t cheap new?”
I have never bothered to waste my time looking up the price of a new CDI, I just know it will be a silly price. This is why the people who come my way are more than happy to buy a used item. People can be slippery though, so I mark every electrical item that I send out in my own unique way! So if anyone dies try pulling a flanker and returning their duff box I can spot it.
“What CDI units are in short supply?”
Usually the one you need! The older the bike the trickier it becomes to get one. Also, the dearer the bike is the less chance of fresh bikes being broken for parts, which is a real issue with classic stuff.
This R1 CDI made just over a bullseye, a fair price.
