A few years back we found this ex 500 GP racer at a bike breakers in Essex. It had ended up there after finishing its racing days. No longer competitive it had slid of the radar, it reappeared after a full restoration along the way. There had also been a few modifications implemented over its original specification, these included Marchesini magnesium race wheels and an AP Racing thumb rear brake. There was also a pair of very rare carbon fibre racing discs, these were changed back to steels at a later date.
The YZR500 motor is seriously trick, it’s blessed with the works magnesium carbs which alone cost around £12,000 back in 1992. In fact, the list price for the engine alone was around £50,000 for the 155bhp two stroke engine.
The chassis was built by Harris Performance, it was all part of a plan to get more bikes on the 500cc GP grid, other chassis kits were available too. This bike was for sale on and off for a year or so, it’s asking price was around £60,000. If you bought it we’d love to hear from you.
